| Topic: Help With Tuckpointing a Stone Foundation | | Hello!
I have a stone foundation in my 1830 house. In some places there are gaps between the stones. At some point, the POs tried to fill in gaps with mortar. Some places held up okay, but in others the mortar is loose and brittle. Do I need a special kind of mortar to repoint with? Also, can I do this in cold weather? I've read that the mortar needs to stay damp for a few days to cure. Is it best to wait till Spring when the basement will naturally be a little more damp? Advice please! I'd like to get this done so I can apply Dry-Lok to the walls and have a nice clean, moisture proof basment! Oh and that reminds me, can I put Dry-Lok over paint. The foundation looks as though it was whitewashed (could be lead, I am not sure). On the bucket of Dry-Lok it says not to put it over paint. Any suggestions?
