Topic: steel lintels
Please help. I have a situation where a home built (single story)under the IRC reqirements has a steel lintel spanning a 16' opening (garage door). The steel is 5 x 3.5 x 5/16, and is not bolted to the wood header. In the IRC book, table R703.7.3, it states that the maximum allowable span for a 6 x 3.5 x 1/4 steel angle iron is 14' on a single story dwelling. This garage has a gable end with all brick above. Q1: Does my steel angle meet IRC code? Q2: Should the steel be lag bolted into the wood header of the garage framing?
